Lyons Copse Scout Campsite

Our local Scout Campsite is Lyons Copse. For information Lyons Copse, please visit

Site Service Team:

We have a team of willing volunteers who meet on a Monday evening from 7 til 9 to keep the site in good working order for all our visitors. The team is small and needs more volunteers to spread the workload.

No special skills are needed so if you are able to help out on a Monday evening just turn up or contact the site administrator on

Over the last year they have managed to

  • Refurbish the Lyons Lodge flooring
  • overhaul the Oak Field toilets (especially the burst pipes)
  • repaired various leaks to the loos, roofs, etc
  • maintained the road system
  • repaired paths
  • and regularly inspected the fire alarms, extinguishers, gas and electrical appliances

Plans for the future include

  • 1) Refurbishment of Pine Cabin toilets.
  • 2) New all-weather carparks
  • 3) Upgrade to the assault course.
  • 4) Improved Disabled access
  • 5) An all year round external toilet facility
  • 6) Outside washing areas on toilet blocks
  • 7) Fencing to the public foot path.
  • 8) New Site entrance - better traffic visibility
  • 9) Lighting and a roof on the Tower
  • 10) Crate stacking – bridge kit – human skills - indoor caving.

Provided they have enough people and time.....

Alternatively, if you have any free time during the week days, Pete Lawley will be able to make use of your time through daylight projects, grass cutting and the like. Contact through the site administrator on

Thanks to the Old Scout Bushcraft team, all our trees have been numbered and recorded on a database in conjunction with Alan. Moving forward this will help us to identify individual trees and plan works more efficiently.

Over the last year we have had a really wet spring this means that many trees, oaks particularly, made a lot of new leaves. Then with the hot summer these leaves became a liability and some branches became unstable. So tree surgeons were brought in to deal with the urgent issues over the summer with further works being carried out in October to remove foreseeable hazards. Please encourage your Groups to use the resultant branches on their fires before raiding the woodpile to try to clear up this debris.

Parking in wet weather

When Groups are using the field to the south of the driveway for drop offs or parking they need to very careful. In very wet weather the field is only suitable for 4x4s and other arrangements need to be made.

Also a voluntary one way system on Sandy Lane is recommended if you are expecting many cars at a time.

If large camps are short of support for parking then the Lyons team MAY be able to assist but at least two week's notice is required.

Whole Site Booking System Changes:

Following several issues with groups incorrectly recording their attendances, it was decided to change to a simpler system at a recent Management Committee meeting.

From now on, a Whole Site Booking will include all the building, all activities and all fields, but will be charged at a flat rate per day. There is likely to be some losers and some who will gain but overall the rate was chosen to be almost cost neutral to the site.

New Toilet Block :

Initial designs have been completed but some queries and a new offer from a modular building supplier have caused us to go back to the drawing board, literally. Once the design has been agreed by several key experienced individuals, the new design will be submitted to Winchester planning department for consideration. We would also appreciate anyone with fundraising experience to put themselves forward to assist us obtaining some support for this project.

In the meantime, the existing toilet block will need to serve another season so is being spruced up in anticipation.

Warden Rota:

The duty warden rota for 2019 has been distributed. If you are unsure when your district duty is please contact the Site Administrator. It is the district responsibility to provide wardens for their duty weekend. Please remember if the weekend also includes a Bank Holiday you will be expected to cover that as well.

Facebook page:

Lyons Copse has its own Facebook page, which enables Groups to submit suitable posts to this site from time to time. Each post is vetted but the submitter needs to ensure that it is appropriate.

Everyone likes to see young people enjoying the site.

Bookings continue to be managed by Mary and Roger Freemantle and they can be contacted on the following email,
